Address Allocation & Registration Policies

The Fermilab Policy on Computing specifies that IP address allocation, including DHCP service, is a restricted central service that is adminstered by the Data Communications & Networks Group.   See:

http://computing.fnal.gov/cd/policy/cpolicy.pdf

The policy of centralized administration and allocation of network addresses applies to any system attached to the facility network.  If a system has additional interface(s) used for private, back-end networks, RFC1918 network address block(s) will be allocated by the Data Communications & Networks Group for the back-end network(s).

Administration of general facility IP address allocation is based on node registration procedures. Sysadmins and users are expected to register their system(s), including the network hardware (ie., ethernet) address of each usable interface, in the MISCOMP database. Static IP address assignments will be issued by the Data Communications group based on the registration information entered by the sysadmin or user in MISCOMP. Static address assignments are normally issued by the end of the next business day.

Node registration is also required for systems configured to use DHCP addresses.  Systems that are either resident on-site, or likely to be brought on-site a number of times, should be registered in MISCOMP.  Visitors and other transient users of the network can utilize a temporary registration web page to obtain a DHCP address that’s usable for the remainder of the current day.

The Data Communications Group will, at their discretion, deny access to any network device that is not properly registered. Examples of network devices subject to being blocked from or denied access to the network include, but are not limited to:

§         any system using an unallocated static IP address

§         any system using an allocated static IP address, but whose hardware address does not match the listed hardware address in MISCOMP

§         any system requesting a DHCP address via any interface whose network hardware (ethernet) address is not registered in MISCOMP.

The MISCOMP node registration web page can be found at (Please note pages below can only be accessed from On-site or via the VPN):

Users can check if their system is registered in MISCOMP by providing either the FNAL tag number, system number, sensitive item number, serial number, or network hardware (ethernet) address:
